Back to Basics

Support! Another complex concept for me for a damn long time. TIME wasted relapsing when support was there but just oblivious to me. This one concept, had I grasped it, would have definitely saved TIME. How much? Couldn't say for everyone. For me, a decade!

Spiritual Connection.

 Whatever your OWN Spiritual connection might be, it MUST be sound. I learned after a very long time that I was asking forgiveness for the WRONG thing. Once I had rid myself of the REAL problem, success was iminent. I had committed adultery and had never really thought about it enough to worry. I broke down right there and then, and asked for forgiveness for breaking my vow with Him.Since then, progress for me has quickened, the quality of life has been raised, and the contentment I had lost since before my divorce, I got back. Divorce is a travesty for an alcoholic or it was for me. Why? Denial took me nearly 10 years to deal with. My prayers now are for anyone who wants to, can add a time saving idea to this site to help others save TIME!

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
  Where I found the "Desiderata"

When I found this wonderful piece of literature it was by itself at a Jewish community festival in Calif back in the mid 70's. It stuck with me then, and is a valuable asset now.Keeps me humble somehow. I believe in the heavens, and everything associated with them. All great things come from above.The desiderata sums up what would take me another 300 pages to convey to the alcoholics struggling for answers. You may even get it in audio. In the ever changing technical world, keeping up, or trying to grasp it can be eluding. Trying to use the "Desiderata" as a guide keeps getting more difficult as the world fights over the dollar. Keeping peace within ourselves gets harder and harder as the ranks of the unemployed grow, wars continue, people kill each other, with crime and vandalizm abounding. With the Bible to ward off depressing thoughts or memories, and the "Desiderata" to start my day, I figure I've got a chance to get through the day without shedding tears, getting in an argument, or relapsing. Time is the thing alcoholics take for granted, so I'm glad to have had the parents I did. By observing them is of monumental help to me now, as most of the attributes of the "Desiderata" were already taught to me. I realize now that I didn't thank them enough.

A Little Luck ( or isn't it?)

 Are you superstitious? Lots of people have their OWN lucky numbers, symbols, or special items. So long as BALANCE is maintained between luck and reality it might be beneficial in a cardiac kinda way. Once that balance gets one sided, whether good or bad, the result is the same. WASTED TIME!

The Heavens

My astrological sign is Sagitarius. Being a recovering alcoholic, I have had numerous chances to dive deep into what the heavens hold. Sleeping outside was a common occurrence and many times the stars were out by the millions. The mind is bound to wander and wonder. I have always been attracted to daily horoscopes, fortune cookies and such. Sometimes I am very surprised to see correlation to what’s happening in my life at the time I am reading the horoscope. I have found that there is a lot of wisdom in what the astrologers and predictors write through their different views. I, personally use It is a site I, personally, can relate to. Great ideas to help me further my progress and maybe allow me to put out a word or phrase that catches somebody’s attention who is in a dilemma with their current struggles.

Why This?

I became acquainted with the "Desiderata" years ago at a Jewish get-together and have found it is a great ethics lesson if you can abide by it. It's a gigantic aid to recovering alcoholics who have temporarily lost their moral being through alcohol. I read it periodically to see if I'm improving my quality of life while still keeping a sound ethical approach to the numerous problems that my years of alcoholism caused. This, combined with other items I've found help me keep focused on the progress I've made.The address, to check out this very informative piece of literature, is on our Links page.
